Sweet Alfie is a huge fan of people and is loved right back by the staff and volunteers of GPI. His favorite things include puzzle games and romps outside with his human friends. This gentle and playful boy weighs in at about 65 pounds, making him on the small side for a male greyhound. His chic black coat will coordinate nicely with any fabric in your family's Matching Pajamas or Ugly Sweater holiday card portrait.The right home for Alfie is a quiet, single family dwelling in the suburbs or countryside with an enclosed backyard. He could be an only pet, or possibly live with another greyhound who has the typical laidback greyhound personality. Alfie has a vigorous prey drive, meaning he cannot cohabitate with any other house pets apart from another compatible greyhound.Alfie is a somewhat timid guy when it comes to novel situations, caused by a combination of nature (a cautious personality) and nurture (little real world experience). While Alfie is fine around almost all greyhounds, being around non-greyhound dogs was initially difficult for him. Having met few if any non-greyhound dogs before he came to GPI, he thought they were scary! Happily Alfie really looks to his person for guidance in an unfamiliar situation, such as an encounter with a non-greyhound dog. A gentle encouraging word, a caress, and perhaps a little treat from his person tells Alfie that the novel situation or unfamiliar dog is no big deal. His adopter will need to continue this practice of kindly reassuring him when novelties arise as he gains more experience in the real world.While his discomfort with non-greyhound dogs has diminished and can generally be overcome with savvy handling, Alfie cannot go to a home situated in a densely populated environment (such as an urban neighborhood, and/or an apartment or townhouse) where close encounters with such dogs are frequent and unavoidable. He likes to take walks and has good leash manners, but needs to be walked in a quiet and open area where he can avoid unexpected meetings with non-greyhound dogs.When we first met Alfie we noticed certain toys can hold unusual value for him. He loves some types of toys, e.g., squeaky balls, so much that at first they made him literally pant with excitement. The great news is our professional trainer has pretty much cracked the code when it comes to Alfie and toy over-exuberance, and has devised a clever way to desensitize him to them. Our trainer will gladly show his new family how it works during the 4 free training sessions included with his adoption. Because of possible lingering toy enthusiasm his new family should not include any younger kids.Alfie would love to be your only pet or a trusty sidekick to your current greyhound.
